The Pontiac Solstice was a Mazda Miata from General Motors -- except I think it was better. Today I'm reviewing the Solstice GXP to explain what was and what I think about it, and I'm going to take you on a tour of the Solstice. I'm also going to drive the Solstice GXP and show you what the Pontiac Solstice was like on the road.

  • Maximum Bob Lutz dream child. In 2009, they were selling them brand new for $21K. Almost pulled the trigger but bought a Crossfire instead which was also on he chopping block.

  • The best part of the solstice/sky journey was the dealer installed option for another 30 hp for a total of 290 and obscene amounts of torque. "Whoops our bad guys we left some power on the table, just bring it back in and toss us a few hundred bucks and we will hook you up."

  • American cars are always designed around the cupholders, first. Designers often fight for weeks over how many cupholders the car should have. Once that is decided it's all about how big they can make the grille and exhaust.

  • The Saturn Sky variant of this car is very high among my dream cars. I've just always felt in a special way about it for some reason. I'll get one eventually, or an Opel GT Roaster (which was just a rebadged Sky for the EU market). The styling of the Pontiac Solstice doesn't fit me tho, it doesn't have that "thing" that makes me love Sky. Even if it's mechanically identical, I'd skip it and search for a Sky or GT.

  • Very cute car. Cheers!

  • Honestly i think it looks ugly...

  • I think the miata looks more poised and agile then the solstice. I do like how the solstice looks, I do but it looks somewhat bloated.

    • @Wojciech Muras the sky looks much better than the solstice

    • I honestly love the looks of the Saturn Sky. There's something almost hypnotizing about its design. Pontiac? Ehhh... Gets a pass. Feels unnecessarily complex, but looks fine. Miata on the other hand seems just tiny. I'm not a large guy, but it still looks almost like an overgrown toy car to me. It appears extremely agile, but definitely not well looking. It's almost boring. There's however a much bigger problem with the Miata - everyone knows it. I've just checked - there are literally 6 for sale in my town for under $5k. And the Solstice? Even counting Sky's and GT Roadsters, there are 5 in my entire state! Its uniqueness is 100% worth it for me. I've wanted one badly for years now...

      Wojciech MurasWojciech MurasHónapja
  • This looks way better than the Miata

  • As an NC owner, I'll politely disagree with you on which is better. What was all the black crud on the back under the roof? Too many steps to operate the soft top too..

  • For someone who said that they love the Pontiac Solstice, you seem to give it a rather low rating. Maybe what I think "love" is, IS much different in meaning than yours. I never drove one, but when I was younger, I had hoped to purchase one or the Sky. Well, it is what it is.

  • I don't have to get out of my seat to raise or lower the top on my Miata. It unlatches from the front and I can lower it with one hand. I do have to stretch a little to raise it, but it still takes one hand.

  • Gutless standard motor - GM reliabilty - a little too small in critical areas ( interior + trunk ) ... doomed from the start ...

  • The front fascia were definitely different between the base and GXP.

  • Ten years old (and a 20? year old design), and the interior and cupholders still work better than the ND Miata. Sigh. Isn't this one of the most reliable GM engines of all time as well?

  • well, since how it is really a corvette with less than 8 cylinders and rounded fenders instead of pointed ones's only natural that it would be better than a miata

  • So the Vauxhall VX220 was not a rebadge of the Opel version?

  • Low power for such a sporty car, Saturn Sky alert

  • 8:22 - it says Solstice GXP just in case you get confused and think you're in a Miata.

  • Cupholders - because you just CAN'T ride in your car without having a beverage with you. No you just can't. Really.

  • You couldn't take 10 minutes and clean up that area on the trunk/roof lid, yellow panel on the interior and gauges? Wow. Could do so much better to present such a cool car.

  • It's a rebadged Opel. Saturn and Vauxhall also had rebadged versions....Doug is an idiot, he could do just a little research and find this out.

  • I bought an '06 Solstice in '08, with 15k miles on it. It had some problems due to GM bean counters doing their best to kill their customers and their own company, but I straightened 'em out. Between me, my daughter and son, we've put 170k miles on it, driving throughout the southeast US. My son still drives it, and has the top down every moment he can. We all love it. The Solstice was and remains the best "driver" I've ever encountered, quirks and all.
