The Bentley Turbo R was the flagship Bentley from 30 years ago. Today I'm reviewing this 1990 Bentley Turbo R to show you what it was like to drive the ultimate Bentley three decades ago. I'm also going to show you all the quirks and features of the Turbo R, and I drive the Bentley Turbo R to show you what it's like on the road.

  • CEO of saying shit the most long -winded, unnecessary, thorough, possible way, all in the name of view time and Ad Revenue.

  • Bentley was bought by RR in 1931. VW bought Rolls Royce from Vickers, a nationalised former establishment engineering firm, in 1998. BMW sort of prised RR away from VW using the fact that they supplied the engines. So now it seems that when capitalism fails the Tory government nationalises (u turn) the capitalists favourite cars, whilst we plebs have to drive Austin Allegros, and even though we won the war and actually got VW started in the first place, they have the audacity to buy our national pride marque. Next thing you know the Indians will buy Jaguar and the Chinese will get hold of MG or similar such nonsense! Ummmm!

  • $30K for a Bentley sounds like a bargain ... until something breaks. Be warned, the maintenance costs for this car are *colossal* if you maintain it properly. The good news is that Bentley still make spare parts for this (yes, 30 years on) but the bad news is that they're hideously expensive. That's before you factor in labour costs. Insurance is another headache. People buying one of these cars with their eyes open, expect the insurance to be substantially more than the insurance for something like a Nissan Micra. But Americans probably aren't being asked to pay a four figure sum to insure a Nissan Micra, and are therefore starting from a lower base. Here in the UK, where insurance is utterly penal, even a Nissan Micra attracts silly premiums, and a Bentley Turbo R would cost as much as a small warship to insure. Even if you're not in the insurance premium hell that is the UK, expect insurance for this car to be fairly painful to endure. Another factor to take into account - if you live in a city with congestion charges in force, they'll be expensive when applied to one of these. Take this car into central London, and the congestion charge will be eye watering. Do your research on congestion charges in big cities in North America, and add these to the ownership costs if you live near a congestion charge enforcement zone. If in future, carbon taxes are levied in addition, this car will be in the super tax bracket. My advice is to spend time becoming an accredited Bentley mechanic before taking this on. You'll save big money on your own purchase if you do, and you can finance your own purchase servicing others. :) If you go into this with your eyes open,. knowing in advance that it's going to be a wallet melter par excellence, but you're prepared to live with that, you can have a lot of fun with one of these. Just make sure you *are* prepared for it to drain your bank account at a furious rate before diving in.

  • Could you test the Version with the BOSCH carburetors? 1980 to 1986? That would be interesting... TURBO R, not the Mulsanne - that is of poor power... Or check the later version with the ZYTEC injection which has even more power and a much better fuel economy. Different topic: One has to mention the temparature of the engine of the TURBO R. It is such a big, powerfull engine, one needs the air-conditioning because it reflecting heat is that high. ;-)

In Europe especially, Muricans are so spoiled with their 0-60 in 7 second minivans... Wonder whats gonna happen when you eventually have to follow emission regulations lik every other country, America`s emission laws are non existent compared to Europe.

  • It is identical to Rolls Royce Silver Spur which are reviewed 3 years back.

    IndranIndran7 hónapja
  • You’re not correct about the base models. The Mulsanne wasn’t the base model the Turbo R was in production- it was far up their product line in 1980 when it was introduced, then replaced by the Mulsanne Turbo in 1984, a model so premium that it was James Bond’s car of choice in two of the novels from that period. The Turbo R (R for roadholding) was introduced a couple of years later as a stiffer, sportier version of the Mulsanne Turbo, and by the time your car was made it had replaced it. The Bentley Eight was the base / entry level model, then the Brooklands.

  • Doug, though I enjoy all of your review of these vehicles, pointing out their various quirks and features, why when you road test them, don't you ever lock the driver's door. While it's commendable that you always fasten your seatbelt, leaving the door unlocked, leaves you vunerable to the door opening in a side impact collision, and exposing you to possibly severe physical injury, and defeating the purpose of the side impact airbags. Not to mention the "embarassment" that might occur if the door were to open when making a right turn, if it isn't securely latched. This happened to me many years ago, in a company owned vehicle, when making a right turn onto a busy urban street, during afternoon rush hour. Funny now, not so amusing then!

    James BoardmanJames Boardman10 hónapja
    • @byteme9718 Not nonsense, the truth. If I hadn't been wearing a seatbelt, I would have been ejected from the vehicle. Cars doors can, and do, pop open in side impact collisions, with occupants being ejected from the vehicle. It happened to my mother, when our vehicle was broadsided by another vehicle which had run a stop sign. My mother was ejected from our car, striking her skull on the pavement, resulting in a brain injury, and permanent physical disability. I was a toddler at the time, and had fallen asleep on her lap. I escaped unharmed, as I slid off her lap, onto the floorboard of our car, when she was ejected.
