Today I'm reviewing the FZJ80 Land Cruiser, and I'm going to show you all the quirks and features of the 1990s Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX450. Then I'm going to drive the Land Cruiser and show you what it's like on the road.

  • I worked at a Toyota Dealer for a bit in 1997. This was my favorite vehicle they made. I liked the engine and its low speed torque. We used to call them Land Crushers because they were so heavy. They were known to eat brakes because of all the weight. Fun Fact, When we would prep these for sale we would let air out of the tires to get them to the proper psi. The tires were up at 80psi for the trip from Japan. They said it was to keep them from rocking around on the boat. I don't recall the sticker price new, but I remember you could get a Tacoma extended cab for 13k and some change.

  • Great review but Doug needs to amend fun factor, it doesn't allow for 4x4 offroad. This 80 series with front and rear locking diffs only had the G wagon to contend with in its day. Even the mighty Hummer H1 had an early traction control that only locked the wheels temporarily (although it had portal axles instead). The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon would be another 10 years coming. They were mighty vehicles.

  • Just bought one for 400 bucks starts and runs everything works 150k on the clock. Sounds great but a tweaker lived in it. The rear seats are missing the 2nd row and 3rd row. Plus he wired up lights on the outside in a really stupid and dangerous way. So got to fix all that. But 400 bucks for a running land cruiser locking diffs too so I think I did good.

  • The Lexus lx450 has the same drivetrain drive chassis suspension linkage as the Toyota Land Cruiser meaning that it is as capable as the land cruiser off road with the same body weight but just the smallest amount of design change through the body panels. it’s got the trd inline 6 and v8 motor choice just like the land cruiser with also the same amount of hp and torque. basically Toyota rebrands the exact same car with a Lexus badge. Also the only difference between the the trd inline 6 is the badge replaced with the lexus logo.

  • i like your videos but i have to say you're complete wrong about the stowing of the third row seats . Basically the vehicle you looked at didn't have the seats positioned correctly for, 'out the way'. you tighted up on the straps which connect the seats to the grab handles and then the seat actually stow into the window space. it is possible the extra padding on the us model lexus version were a bit big to get into the window but certainly the Landcruiser more basic seat did stow into the window space and this is actually a better solution than the 200 series which does take out rear cargo access space. You mentioned modern suv's stoving under the floor but that isnt a ood solution for something like the landcruiser because under where the third row is , is the spare tire and in some markets the second fuel tank! So to maintain ground clearance and range the seats are a great design. When you fold the seats correctly ( certainly in the landcruiser version) you have the same rear width with the seat folded as the rear door width so you can still get full cargo usage. i think you'd probably only figure this out by living with this vehicle. We use an 1990 80 series and two 1997,1999 lanrcruiser prados for our Scottish outdoor business, ( the prado/colorado has the same third row seat design) we carry 8 people, and more often just carry tons of outdoor equipment in these trucks, they are simply awesome!

I also loved the same-era 4Runner for the simple lines, but the LandCruiser is a cut above. I wouldn't buy one today for thirsty reasons, but they are gorgeous.

  • Great video Doug as always, but there’s a difference between The land Cruiser, And the Lexus Lx 450, And it’s soooooooo slightly right in our faces and we never notice it. Most LC are one color all over the Lexus Lx is two tone you’ll never see a Lexus with a one tone color it’s always two tone. I have the exact same color vehicle, I wouldn’t trade it for nothing anything In the world. it’s sooooooo worth maintaining and keeping it. I believe this is the best SUV know to man kind. There are times when I wash my truck and it make some of the newer SUVs look bad.

  • Among several other things, the wheels are in fact not identical to the Land Cruiser. Although obviously the same pattern, the LX450 wheels all have a groove machined into the spoke to distinguish it from a Land Cruiser. Many also came with an optional finish, e.g chrome. The main reason that Toyota does not make a large number of tasteful appointments on such vehicles is that they know that owners in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, etc., are going to accessorize it with aftermarket items that will make it much more useful off-road. BTW, at 26:26 how is the 1990 LS400 used off-road in comparison to the other vehicles on the chart?

    Steve McGrathSteve McGrath3 hónapja
