The 1996 Chevy Impala SS was a bright spot of the 1990s -- and a star in the General Motors lineup. Today I'm reviewing the '96 Impala SS, and I'm going to show you all around the Impala SS. Then I'm going to drive the Chevy Impala SS and explain what it's like on the road.

  • You gave the acceleration a 1? For the 96 impala ss? A 1? You were genuinely impressed by how fast it was and yet you give it a 1? Wow horrible score for a monster of a car...

  • I owned a 1995 SS, they came from the factory with a remote. Perhaps you meant just the alarm?

  • I have had a 94 and now a 96. The 96 is much better and more reliable. The build quality is terrible for all the years. The interiors were especially poor for fit and finish. Biggest issue these days is the lack of most genuine factory parts.. All the clone builders soaked up all the parts to convert Police cars into impalas ruining it for actual Impala owners. More cars should have the rear gas fill location. Much easier than today's cars.

  • " skipped over two decades" Thats hilarious. GM, and everyone else involved was ready to move on. All the car companies were forced to quickly figure out emissions control. They did good, in respect to meeting the standards...... all those control systems were a first attempt, and they worked, for the most part..... they just didnt last very long. 70's , 80's and 90's, were known for " they dont build them like they used too" Do yall remember that? Like we all expected quality to go down, as production ramped up. That held true for many years. Many of us grew up , thinking they dont build them like they used too. Now, every model year is a huge leap forward in quality and technology .

  • "The Caprice, which was a fairly tame, full-size sedan, mainly aimed at old people, government fleets, and rental car companies..." Clearly, GM failed. I am the exact opposite of all of those, but I love my 1994 Caprice.

  • The SS was NOT quicker than the SHO. Back in the 90s I used to eat these for breakfast in my 1990 SHO. Factory SHO was 6.5 seconds 0-60. Mods made them even quicker. The SHO was also better to drive on a back road despite being FWD. But, yes, similar ideas. Chevy took their big family sedan and made it a monster. Ford took their people’s car and turned it into a german fighter.

  • Also the new Imapla is horrible. Literally gets smoked on the streets by all cars...and the design..its a little dated. The model before was crazy fast. Although we alllllll know Chevy powertrains crap out and sound horrible before 10 years. And side note about that fuel gauge. Its not refined it only reads 4 levels. Even in the new Malibu you have to go by the digital. The gauge doesnt move right. Youll be at half tank..next read almost gone lol

  • Doug comments that the Impala SS uses the same transmission as the Caprice, but that it isn't up to the extra power of the SS... It is the same engine too Doug - same power in both cars. You could get the Caprice with the L99, but why would you? Also, these cars were the end of the body on frame sedans for GM. In terms of acceleration - with minor changes (2.5 exhaust, 3.73 gears and reprogramming) my 94 caprice pulled harder then a 2013 Challenger RT and would break the tires loose on every upshift from launch to about 60mph when we stopped racing. The older style LT1 was a different beast then the newer LS style.

  • A little funny story for you Doug. I was 14 years old in my grandmother’s 2001 Chevy Impala at the airport. Never driven in my life. My mother left the car to use the ladies room. A police officer came to my car and told me that I had to keep the car moving. My narrow mind didn’t know how to shift gears yet. Lord and behold my mother’s friend called and helped me figure out how the heck to change gears 😂😂😂
